September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month

Southern NH Medical Center

We will have bulletin boards in our Cardiopulmonary rehab department and a poster in the lobby of the building. We will promote our classes to our cardiopulmonary rehab pts and have balance games/challenges for them to participate in that week.

In the spirit of Falls Prevention Awareness month St. Joseph Community Services in launching two new A Matter of Balance classes in the month of September. On Friday, September 21st   we are hosting a Project Council event for community diners and grateful to have Mary MacCaffrie, M.Ed, Public Education Administrator at the Office of the State Fire Marshal present: Remembering When: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults.

Title of Event and Brief Description:  
How to Prevent Falls for older adults are placemats provided by the Department of Safety to several agencies around New Hampshire who serve meals to the senior residents of the state.  The placemats depict the 8 key safety messages of falls prevention as outlined in the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Remembering When™ program.  The program has adopted a nostalgia theme that has safety messages presented through discussion, trivia games, and songs.   It helps older adults learn strategies to live safely at home for as long as possible.  The pdf version of the placemats are provided on the Falls Task Force website.

Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging

Balance Screen and Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® Demonstration
 We will host a falls prevention information table including the “Safe House” model and conduct brief individual balance screens and provide recommendations to reduce fall risk. At 12:15, members of our Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® exercise class will perform a 15 minute demonstration highlighting program components.
