Falls are a significant health problem for older adults. More than one third of community-dwelling adults over 65 and more than 50% over age 80 will fall each year. Falls rates are much higher in institutionalized older adults. Falls are a leading cause of injury deaths for people 65 and older. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Half of individuals hospitalized for hip fractures could not return home independently. As a health care provider, you have the ability to both screen and assess your patient for risk of falling. You also can identify evidence based interventions specifically targeted at reducing a particular patient’s risk.
